Marine Science -"The work that I completed at the aquarium was immensely fun, greatly rewarding and sometimes a bit challenging. This co-op allowed me to learn about several fields of marine biology, as well as teach me new scientific skills and put to use the ones that I had previously learned in the classes that I have taken."
Rebecca Langlois - Clearwater Marine Aquarium
Marine Science- "I also learned about what it is like working with all different kinds of people. Along with that I learned how to deal with many different situations and a bit about myself and how I handle things." "The work I experienced at the Oceanarium has helped me to know more about a career possibility I could pursue after I graduate."
Cynthia Kroswek - Mount Desert Oceanarium
Marine Science-"I found this job to be extremely beneficial in developing working skills. I learned amongst all of the important skills to be patient, communicate and know when to be a follower and when to be a leader."
Paula Muellner - Suffolk County Parks
Biology-"I could not have been placed in a job more suited to my major and my future field. The Department of Natural Resources allowed me to apply skills learned in biology, marine science and environmental studies classes."
Kristin Zaffuto - East Hampton Department of Natural Resources
Biology-"Going into this co-op my goal was to become a research scientist working with marine mammals. After this co-op, that goal has been reinforced."
Ashley Blessing - Florida Marine Research Institute
Biology-"My expectations were clarified as a result of my co-op, because I once thought that a job in animal care was not very complicated. I learned that it is very involved and important that everything be done slowly and precisely. This placement has enhanced my goals because I am convinced that animal husbandry is the field that I want to pursue."
Martha Lipowitz - Beardsley Park Zoo
Environmental Science- "From this experience I learned several valuable things including, the identification of water fowl, water monitoring and piping plover restoration. Most of all I learned that I love this type of work. Working outside is one of the things that I love and want to do. I looked forward to work everyday and am very sad that I am leaving."
Danielle Decatur - Town of East Hampton Department of Natural Resources
Marine Science -"I think that this co-op helped me decide that I would like to concentrate on fisheries biology...Overall I would say that my co-op experience was great, it gave me a chance to work with scientists on a real research project. I could definitely see myself doing this in the future."
Melanie Rhodes - Water Institute
Marine Science - "I learned research skills throughout the whole process of my project from data collection to the identification of tail patterns...The one skill that I learned this summer that is going to help me throughout my life is public speaking."
Jennifer Ryan - Mt. Desert Oceanarium.
Biology - "The proof that my objectives were met is that I received positive feedback, that I did a good job in helping to maintain the lab, and, after my co-op was completed, I was hired as a full time employee."
Marcy Sexauer - Cosper Environmental Laboratory
Marine Science - "With this co-op I definitely met the objectives I had set for myself. I was able to see a huge variety of possible jobs in my field. I now have hands on experience in the sampling techniques of fish, crab, and mammals, as well as the fishing and capture processes."
Amy Beier - University of Alaska Sea Grant
Biology - "Looking back on this summer, I see that it was a lot of hard work, but I enjoyed it. I think that the experience I gained from this co-op was very beneficial in developing my career goals."
Kimberly Marsinko - Mt. Desert Oceanarium
Marine Science - "This co-op has helped me realize that research is not for me. I want to stay in science. It has always been of interest to me but now I am not certain what path in science is the right path for me."
Rosemary Woodall - Center of Marine Biology
Biology - "I would like to take this time to state that I had one amazing summer this year. I am so glad that I could apply the things I learned in college to real life properties because a book only goes so far. I am looking forward to the new school year with a new attitude of enthusiasm and new found energies. I think this experience has given me more determination, more strength and a greater sense of the meaning of hard work. I love my field of study, and because of this co-op and the knowledge Bernie, Art and Deilsie have taught me, I am determined to study intensely, excited to share my learning experiences, as well as biology, to other people, and push myself to the endless opportunities of my career choice. I want to touch people's lives and help them make responsible choices toward their own health and the earth. The rewards would be truly unfathomable and I would feel as happy and satisfied as I did working at this co-op."
Nicole Donato - Lackawana River Corridor Association
Marine Science - "I was definitely tested on my interpersonal skills this summer. I had to deal with two bosses, six co-workers and hundreds of tourists. I basically dealt with people constantly. I was either working with them, giving them a tour or presentation or helping at the desk. I know I did well because I did not have any problems with anyone this summer."
Jennifer Ryan - Mt. Desert Oceanarium
Marine Science - "Through outreach I have also been given the chance to learn about the biological makeup, locomotion, eating habits, reproduction habits and sensory adaptations of various life forms. By doing so, it prepares me for other fields such as zoology, animal behavior and even just general biology. In accordance to hopefully narrowing down my future career I looked at outreach as a jumpboard to spring into different careers."
Kevin Woo - National Aquarium in Baltimore
Marine Science - "Overall this co-op has taught me that marine science is definitely what I want a as career."
Rebecca Langlois - Clearwater Marine Aquarium
