Australearn: A Marine Ecology Travel Course to Australia

July 4 - August 1, 1996*

A Travel Course to the remote western coast of Australia and the Northern Territory. Offered by Southampton College of Long Island University and AustraLearn, U.S. Center for Australian Studies.

The Australearn Gallery

Tropical Marine Ecology is a one month travel and field course to study coastal and tropical ecosystems of remote and often inaccessible areas along the Western coast of Australia and the Northern Territory. The course will cover a diversity of coastal as well as inland ecosystems. There will be ample opportunities for snorkeling, diving, reef-walking, wildlife observation, hiking and nature photography.

Starting in the temperate city of Perth in Southwestern Australia, we will travel northward by land vehicle, exploring areas of the sparsely populated coastline of the Indian Ocean. Areas studied will include the Pinnicles Desert, Kalkarri Gorge, the Shark Bay region (an area that has large shell deposits, living stromotolites and dolphins feeding in knee-deep water). A few days will be spent at Ningaloo Reef (a unique coral reef ecosystem). After reaching the northern coastal town of Broome, an old pearling town known for its large tidal range and dinosaur tracks, we will travel northeast to the tropical city of Darwin. Considerable time will be spent exploring the region between Broome and Darwin. This area includes a large region of fossilized coral reef. Areas studied will include Windjana Gorge National Park, Geike Gorge, Tunnel Creek, Katherine Gorge and Kakadu National Park (a world heritage park). The trip concludes in Darwin.

The course will be taught by Australian faculty who have been chosen for their knowledge and their genuine interest in the subject areas. Professor Goldberg from Southampton College of Long Island University will lead the course. He has been to Australia on numerous occasions leading trips and studying marine organisms in the coastal waters of Australia.

Master Workshop in Art

July 8 - 19 and July 22 - August 2, 1996

Pictures

Dates of Art and Photography Exhibitions

Summer by the Sea
This summer come to where the artists are -- come to Southampton. Experience the water, the landscape, the light that has attracted such artists as Willem DeKooning, Jackson Pollock and Larry Rivers to the East End of Long Island.

Two Sessions Offered
Choose from two, two-week sessions. Both are for artists and teachers who have mastered the basic techniques of painting, drawing, sculpture and mixed-media.

Session I (July 8 - 19): An in-depth studio experience with an emphasis on the application of studio art to instruction.

Session II (July 22 - August 2): An in-depth studio experience with a focus on exhibition and critique.

The Masters Workshop in Art was an incredible experience. I was able to focus and organize my creativity. The atmosphere was breathtakingly inspirational. I enjoyed myself so much that I decided to stay here and am now working and living here.
...Andrea Boness,
Sag Harbor, NY (formerly of Chicago, Ill.)
The program has the special advantage of offering workshop students the chance to learn about the creative process from the perspective of the many visiting artists we are so lucky to have available to us. The visiting artists, a vital component to the program, are esteemed not only for their quality, but for their variety as well. Artists this summer will include Larry Rivers, Eric Fischl, April Gornik, Gerry Pryor, Suzanne Anker, Dan Welden (printmaker), Karen Shaw (artist/curator), Berenice D'Vorzon (artist, teacher, printmaker), Robert Dash (painter) and other renowned and exciting "local" artists. These artists will discuss their work and their processes and will link the students to the area's diverse and active art community. Students will visit some of the artists' studios, and some of the artists will come to the college. Many of the artists will critique the students' work. In addition to scheduled visits with the artists, the Director, Ann Chwatsky, will lead the students on trips in the Hamptons to galleries, museums and historical sites. The East End of Long Island is a rich resource for all artists and especially for imaginative, enthusiastic advanced students.

The Master Workshop in Art provided me the opportunity to learn, to think, to listen, to see, to speak and most importantly to work and grow as an artist.
...Brad Cushman, Southeast Oklahoma State University,
Chair of Art Department
Dan Welden, the printmaker for the Master Workshop in Art, conducts a special and unusual instructional segment for the students. He teaches students his unique monotype techniques. This hands-on workshop gives new insights into the "painterly print" of monotypes. No previous experience is necessary. Students find themselves intrigued and some will adapt the techniques to their teaching methods in the future and some will simply appreciate the new knowledge.

Students will earn three credits (undergraduate or graduate) per session, and will choose with the director a project to be completed during the workshop. Students will share studio space overlooking Shinnecock Bay and the Atlantic Ocean. Occasionally, models will be available to give the students an opportunity to refresh drawing skills or to prepare studies for painting or sculptures.

It was beyond my wildest expectations.
...Elisabeth Groenewegen,
The Netherlands
The location of Southampton College is beautiful; the campus is situated overlooking the water and receives cool ocean breezes and bright sunshine. A swimming pool and tennis courts are available for students, and the campus is located near the ocean and bay beaches. The campus offers a shuttle service to Southampton Village and the Ocean beach at no charge to students. Students should note, however, that this is a college campus. Participants will be housed in dormitories, not hotel rooms, and meals are taken in the cafeteria where the food is pleasant.

Details
The workshop is a program for artists conducted by artists. Selected students will spend two or four intense weeks living and working at Southampton College with studios overlooking Shinnecock Bay and the Atlantic Ocean. Students interact with visiting artists through critiques, discussions and visits to the artists' studios. An instructional printmaking workshop with Dan Welden is included. Three graduate or undergraduate credits are awarded per session. Low cost housing is available. Students enrolled in both sessions receive housing at no charge during the second session (meals are extra).

Visiting Artists have included:
Roy Lichtenstein / Larry Rivers / Eric Fischl / Audrey Flack / Miriam Schapiro / April Gornik / Joe Zucker / Jerry Saltz / Robert Dash / Berenice D'Vorzon / Dan Welden

The 21st Annual Southampton Writers' Workshops

July 27 - August 2, 1996

Southampton College of Long Island University is located in the heart of the beautiful seaside community known as the Hamptons, an area that has become the home of many of our best contemporary writers. The magnificent homes, the beaches, the cultural events, the sense of living in the country while maintaining a proximity to New York City, the very beauty of the Hamptons, have all been factors in drawing writers to the area. But perhaps one of the strongest magnets for writers is the desire to be part of the community of writers that has been growing steadily over the years.

We invite you to join this community by participating in the 1996 Southampton Writers' Workshops. This year we are offering workshops in poetry and fiction with Marvin Bell and Stewart O'Nan. The workshops are scheduled so that participants can study in one or both genres.

The Program

The 1996 Southampton Writers' Workshops run from Saturday, July 27 to Friday, August 2. Students will be able to schedule individual conferences with their instructors. Space is limited and on a first-come basis. Participants are urged to register early.
