Introduction

The Office of Continuing Studies provides the non-traditional student with alternative learning experiences including lectures, workshops and intensive seminars. Topics for courses have included art, computers, writing, foreign languages, English as a Second Language, and more. Programs for Children

Daycamp

The summer Daycamp at Southampton College is a unique experience for children between the ages of five and twelve. The camp utilizes the special environment and talent found only in an academic community such as Southampton. Activities include programs in art, computer science, marine science, sports, swimming, and drama. For a brochure, contact the Office of Continuing Studies at (516) 287-8316.

Kindercamp

This unique half-day program, designed for campers between the ages of three and four, is located in the Children’s School (where a year-round, early childhood program is offered by the Campus). Summer activities at the Kindercamp include arts and crafts, swimming lessons, storytelling, imaginative plays, dances, adventures in our outdoor playground, and field trips to nature preserves, farms, beaches, and places of special interest. Programs for High School Students

Application
Introduction to Drawing

The Details: An intensive workshop in which students work from a live model and still life. Some experimental drawings will be created. Mornings are spent in the studio, while afternoons are for visiting local galleries and some well-known artists on supervised field trips. Evening recreational activities, trips, and beach cookouts are included. Students are housed in campus dormitories, two per room.

Eligibility: Applicants must be high school students entering their junior or senior year in the Fall of 1997, and have a combined PSAT/SAT score of at least 950 or an average of 80 in course work.

Dates: July 13 - 18, July 20 - 25

Cost: $300.
This fee includes room and board, tuition, and supplies. Some evening activities may be extra. Tuition refunds will be allowed for students who withdraw their application at least two weeks prior to the start of the workshop.

Application Deadline: Applications received after May 27, 1997, risk being wait-listed.

Long Island Environment: Resources and Issues, Problems and Solutions

The Details: This weeklong course will introduce students to the terrestrial and marine environments of Long Island and their collective resources, and present relevant issues facing these resources. Students will also explore problems that face these resources as well as solutions that have been implemented or proposed to safeguard or restore them. Field trips to local ecosystems are scheduled. Students are housed in dormitories, two per room.

Dates: July 20 - 25, 1997

Cost: $300.
This fee includes room and board, tuition, supplies. Some evening activities may be extra. Tuition refunds will be allowed for students who withdraw their application at least two weeks prior to the start of the workshop.

Application Process: Students must complete all items on the application. High school transcripts, PSAT/SAT scores, and a writing sample must accompany the application along with a check for $300.

Introduction to Marine Science

The Details: This unique one-week field experience is specifically designed for current high school sophomores and juniors and will provide participants with an introduction to marine science. The program will cover topics in marine ecology, coastal geology, physical oceanography, and ichthyology. Approximately one day will be devoted to the study of each area. Field trips aboard college vessels and vehicles will be included in each day’s work. Methods of measurement and sampling the marine environment will be stressed. Students are housed in dormitories, two per room.

Eligibility: Applicants must be high school students entering their junior or senior year in the Fall of 1997, and have a combined PSAT/SAT score of at least 950 or an average of 80 in course work.

Dates: Students can choose one of three weeks:
July 27 - August 1
August 3 - August 8
August 10 - August 15

Cost: $300.
This fee includes room and board, tuition, and supplies. Some evening activities may be extra. Tuition refunds will be allowed for students who withdraw their applications at least two weeks prior to the start of the workshop.

Introduction to Writers & Writing

The Details: Writers and Writing is a week-long introduction to college-level creative writing and the English program at Southampton College. Through a variety of seminars, workshops, and special events, students will meet a number of noted authors who visit the campus in the summer, attend readings by distinguished poets and novelists, and learn to develop their own creative writing skills under the guidance of a resident writer who will work with them individually. Mornings will be spent in the classroom, while afternoons may be spent in the field for inspiration and completion of writing assignments.
The week will also feature visits to local sites of literary and historic significance as well as excursions, dinners and special events.

Dates: July 6 - 11, 1997
