The Southampton Writers Conference welcomes submissions of unpublished, original work in the genres of fiction, poetry, short story, memoir, screenwriting and playwriting. Workshops are geared toward both published and unpublished writers, and acceptance is based on the promise and depth of the writing sample, along with an indication that the applicant will benefit from the Conference. Conference workshops may be taken for academic credit.

The deadline for application to the 2002 Southampton Writers Conference is May 1 (deadline for scholarship consideration is April 2, 2002). Early registration is encouraged, as workshops are limited to twelve writers and will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis. Notification of acceptance will ordinarily be mailed within four weeks. Applications received after May 1 will be considered on a rolling basis.

Applicants must be at least 18 years of age, and must register for the entire 12 days of the conference. Applications will be accepted by mail only.

Submission Guidelines

  • All applicants must complete an application form and submit a writing sample of unpublished, original work of up to 20 pages (15 pages for poetry).
  • Manuscripts must be in 12-point font with the writer's name on each page. Pages must be numbered. Please include a brief synopsis if the work is an excerpt from a longer piece.
  • Manuscripts cannot be returned.
  • Submissions must be received by May 1, 2002 (deadline for scholarship consideration is April 2, 2002).
  • An application fee of $15.00 must be mailed at the time of application to cover copying and reading costs.
  • If applying for a scholarship, please include one letter of recommendation attesting to the strength of your work and commitment as a writer as well as a statement of purpose.
  • If auditing, please include a brief statement of purpose.

Auditors

Those who are serious about writing but have not yet developed a substantial writing sample, or do not have one prepared for close critique, may apply to the conference as an auditor. Teachers of writing, editors, or those who simply love to read and write may also apply as an auditor. With the exception of critiquing, auditors participate in all aspects of the workshops, as well as all ancillary conference events. You need not submit a writing sample if applying as an auditor, but must provide a brief statement of purpose.

A maximum of four auditors will be allowed per workshop, and placement will be assigned on a first-come, first-served basis, so early registration is encouraged. Please be sure to indicate your workshop preferences on the application form.
