Writing For Love, Writing For Money is Theme of Summer Writers Conference New Crime Fiction Workshop is Taught by Former Police Officer and Author Robert Leuci

Southampton, NY -- Annette Gordon-Reed whose recent book about Thomas Jefferson's relationship with Sally Hemings recharged a historic debate, and noted crime writer Bob Leuci are among the eight prominent authors participating in the 25th annual Summer Writers Conference at Southampton College this June.

The authors will conduct two-hour workshops during the day and give an evening lecture or reading at Duke Lecture Hall, from June 28 through July 6, 2000 at Southampton College. Writers can sign up for workshops on poetry, fiction, short story, or crime fiction writing, held during the afternoons. The accompanying lecture series, open to the public, is entitled "Writing for Love, Writing for Money?" and is held evenings at the College.

The summer conference offers students of writing a concentrated exposure to contemporary authors in a variety of genres. Working in small groups, students will have a chance to participate in writing exercises throughout the week. Mornings are reserved for writing, or to explore the beaches and surrounding arts community of the Hamptons.

The "Writing for Love, Writing for Money" lecture series opens with a panel discussion June 28, and continues June 29 through July 3. Writer and lawyer Annette Gordon-Reed, whose blockbuster "Thomas Jefferson and Sally Hemings: An American Controversy" (University Press of Virginia, 1997), remains a lively topic of debate among historians and the general public, will participate in the reading and lecture series. Other distinguished writers scheduled to give lectures or readings include John Dufresne, William Heyen, Robert Leuci, June Spence, Susan Choi, Carter Coleman, and Robert Reeves. All readings and discussions will be held at 8 p.m. at the Duke Lecture Hall on campus.

This year for the first time the Conference is offering a Crime Fiction writing workshop, led by Bob Leuci, whose career in the New York City police department was depicted in the book and movie "Prince of the City." Leuci is a prolific writer of crime novels, including "Fence Jumpers" (for which he is currently co-writing the screenplay with "NYPD Blue's" David Caruso ), "Snitch," "Captain Butterfly," and "Odessa Beach," among others.

The Short Story workshop will be led by June Spence, author of the collection, "Missing Women and Others," named a New York Times Notable Book of 1998. Fiction Writing will be taught by John Dufresne, whose novel "Louisiana Power & Light," is being turned into a Miramax movie. William Heyen, whose work has appeared in numerous publications and anthologies, will lead the Poetry Workshop. Heyen was born on Long Island and writes about the area in many of his poems.

The conference may be taken for graduate or undergraduate credit, or audited. On-campus housing is available for Conference participants. The public lecture series costs $75.00 for the entire series, or $15.00 per event.
