Fax: (631) 283 4081Southampton, N.Y. - Despite earning its first-ever 20-win season, the Southampton College women's basketball team just missed an NCAA tournament bid and will instead compete in the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference tournament March 11-12 in Binghamton, NY.
After falling in the semifinals of the New York Collegiate Athletic Conference playoffs on Thursday, March 2, at Philadelphia University 86-79, the Lady Colonials were listed No. 8 in the Northeast in the NCAA's Division II rankings. Only the top six teams make the NCAA tournament. "This will be our sixth-consecutive trip to the ECAC tournament," said Colonials coach Tony Bozzella. " We won the last two and are shooting to be the first team ever to win three straight."
The 20-8 Lady Colonials will face nemesis Philadelphia University at 2 p.m. on Saturday. The Lady Rams are 21-8 and ranked No. 7 in the Northeast. In the other game, SUNY-Binghamton (25-2) takes on Adelphi University (18-9). Binghamton was denied an NCAA bid because they are in the transitional phase of becoming a Division I team. The finalists play Sunday.
The Lady Colonials ousted Molloy College (11-16) 60-42 in the quarterfinals of the NYCAC playoffs on Tuesday, Feb. 29. St. Rose (32-0) eventually won the league title and is the only NYCAC team to make the NCAA tournament this year. Last year, the Lady Colonials beat Philadelphia University for the ECAC title.
