Southampton College's young two-woman pitching rotation KO?d the Concordia Clippers in a home-opening double-header on Wednesday, March 28, and first-year Coach Cassie Arroyo is hoping for more good things to come from them, perhaps leading to the team's first playoff berth in four years.

Sophomore Kim Carroll pitched a five-hit shutout to stop the Clippers 2-0. In game two, the Colonials jumped out to a 5-0 lead thanks to two hits and two RBI by freshman Rose Zollo. Freshman Shayma Hill held on for a complete game as the Colonials won 7-2. The Colonials are thus 2-0 in the New York Collegiate Athletic Conference, but only 3-8 overall after a grueling spring break tourney in Orlando, Fla., vs. some of the country's top Division II powers.

The Colonials ended with a 7-13 New York Collegiate Athletic Conference record in 2000, narrowly missing a playoff berth, and return all their key players while adding some impressive freshmen. Carroll, of Melville, N.Y., had suffered an injury that didn't allow her to swing a bat at all last season, but still threw a no-hitter and is at full strength this year. Joining her will be lights-out pitcher Hill, of Citrus Heights, Calif., who also is a power hitter. The rotation of Carroll and Hill should be a fierce Colonial one-two punch.

"Kim seems to be back to her dominant form from her high school years," Coach Arroyo said, "and Shayma also has the potential to be a dominating force in our conference."

Junior twins Robin and Shannon Owens of Richmond, Va., were named captains and are rock steady position players at catcher and first base. Zollo, of Hicksville, N.Y, an outfielder and backup catcher, went 3-for-5 in the doubleheader and freshman third baseman Annie Silkowski, of Bozrah, Conn., went 2-for-4. Freshman outfielder Erin Molloy, of East Patchogue, N.Y, hit a double and triple for two RBI.

"Although we are a very young team with only two upperclassmen, I feel that our work ethic and determination will help lead us into the playoffs for the first time since 1997," Arroyo said . "I have a great group of kids who have a never-say-die attitude."
