The creative efforts of Robert Shaughnessy, Professor of Music at the Southampton Campus, will be recognized this spring in two premieres of new works he has composed over the past two years. The major work, Celebration, was commissioned by the Long Island String Festival Association and will be presented at festivals in Nassau and Suffolk Counties in February and March of 1996.

Bulgarian Scenes for solo viola and small orchestra was commissioned by the North Shore Pro Musica and will be presented in a March 3, 1996 concert at the Stony Brook School, as part of the North Shore Pro Musica's 1995-96 concert season. Guest artists are the Ward Melville Chamber Orchestra, Philip Preddice, conductor.

Another piece composed by Dr. Shaughnessy, He Was A Fine Musician, is scored for string trio. Dr. Shaughnessy composed all three works through the support of a 1993-95 Long Island University faculty research grant.

Dr. Shaughnessy earned the Doctor of Music Arts at Boston University and has taught at Holy Cross College, the Massachusetts State College at Lowell. As cellist, he has performed with the Naumberg Symphony, the Pan American Symphony, and the Symphony of the New World. His viola da gamba activity includes recordings and performances with the Suffolk Consort. His classical guitar performances with the Paganini Duo and other chamber music groups were presented at Columbia University, Carnegie Hall, The Barge, and on record for Orion, Spanish Music, Vax-Turnabout, and Opus One. His original works are published by Peer-Southern, R. Ronson, Spanish Music Center and Klaus Schruf Verlag.

Dr. Shaughnessy is a resident of Southampton Village and has been a Professor of Music at the Southampton Campus since 1965.
