Michael S. Brophy has been appointed Associate Provost for Enrollment Services at Southampton Graduate Campus of Long Island University, it was announced this week by Provost Tim Bishop. In this new position, Brophy will coordinate the work of the offices of Admissions, Financial Aid, Registrar, Bursar and the Freshman Program.

"My goal is to make sure the services we offer the students are the best they can be in these five areas," said Brophy, whose appointment began February 3. Brophy has held leadership positions in enrollment management at three different institutions. He comes to Southampton from SUNY College of Technology at Canton where as Dean of Enrollment Management he implemented a direct student loan program and was responsible for a 13 per cent increase in freshman enrollment.

"We are delighted that a person of Michael's expertise and experience is joining the college," said Bishop. "Competition for the best students is becoming increasingly intense. We are confident that Michael's leadership will enable us to continue to enroll students who can benefit from a Southampton Graduate Campus education."

Brophy's appointment caps a series of exciting developments at the College last year including a ceremonial groundbreaking for a new $9 million academic building, the appointment of journalist Roger Rosenblatt as Parsons Family University Professor in Writing, the appointment of Wayne Miller as the new Academic Dean, and the announcement of three new Fulbright Scholars.

Brophy, 33, earned a B.A. in music and a master's in English from the College of St. Rose in Albany where he served as Associate Director of Admissions from 1985-88. He went on to serve as Director of Enrollment Management for the Sage Colleges in Albany and Troy N.Y. and at Stephens College in Columbia, Missouri before taking the position at SUNY Canton in 1994.

Brophy said he will work to improve Southampton's recruitment efforts and to build on the substantial increase in retention of students that occurred from Fall of 1995 to 1996. He also has major plans to involve alumni more aggressively in recruiting of students. He and his wife Tara and their son Sullivan have moved to Hampton Bays.
