Southampton, NY -- Outboard Marine Corporation of Illinois, in conjunction with the Outboard Marine Corporation Foundation, its philanthropic arm, has provided Southampton Graduate Campus of Long Island University with two engines for the marine research vessel SHINNECOCK, which is based at the College's Marine Station on Shinnecock Bay.
The 90-horsepower Johnson outboard engines will power the boat until March 1998, when they will be returned.
"I'm exceptionally pleased that Outboard Marine Corporation has been so generous in providing these engines," said Dick McIntyre, Director of the Marine Station, and a resident of Sag Harbor. "Their support will benefit the many students who utilize the SHINNECOCK for marine science research."
The Marine Station, located one block south of the campus, is the site of laboratories, classes and docking space for several research vessels, including the PAUMANOK. These elements comprise an integral part of the College's acclaimed Marine and Environmental Sciences programs.
Students in the Marine and Environmental Science programs have won 27 Fulbright Scholarships in the past 22 years. Six alone came from the 1997 graduating class, an impressive total for a school of the size of Southampton. Ms. Farrell Hochmuth, an Environment Studies major from Glen Ellyn, Ill., recently became the College's sixth recipient in 1997.
Outboard Marine Corporation is a leading manufacturer and marketer of outboard engines, boats and accessories, based in Waukegan, Ill. They made the donation after McIntyre explained the costly expense of powering the College's research vessels.
"We are glad to play a part in supporting the marine science program at Southampton Graduate Campus," said Jodi R. Van Oever, Secretary for the OMC Foundation.
