Writing and Marine Science, two of the premiere academic programs at Southampton Graduate Campus of Long Island University, each have received $15,000 grants from the East Hampton-based Evan Frankel Foundation.

The Writing and English program has gained considerable momentum following the March appointment of Roger Rosenblatt, the acclaimed author and television journalist, as Parsons Family University Professor in Writing.

The Marine Science Program, which is one of the nation's finest, will receive three $5,000 scholarships. In the past 21 years, Southampton Graduate Campus has produced 21 Fulbright Scholars from the program, an impressive total for a school of its size.

"I'm exceptionally pleased that The Evan Frankel Foundation has awarded this grant to two of our top academic programs," said Timothy Bishop, Provost at Southampton Graduate Campus. "Support such as this enables us to grow as an institution."

The Evan Frankel Foundation was founded in April 1991. The late Mr. Frankel, who received an Honorary Degree from Southampton Graduate Campus in 1982, helped found the Jewish Center of the Hamptons and was active in the East End community for more than 50 years.

The foundation's primary emphasis is in higher education, arts and humanities, human services, medical research and the environment. The grant reflects Evan Frankel's interest in literature and the ecology.

"We're all very grateful to the Evan Frankel Foundation," said Rosenblatt, who is a regular contributor to Time magazine and The New Republic. "We are especially pleased that the award will go for the benefit of students."
