The following list includes the scheduled speakers for the spring
1997 Honors
Program Merit Fellows lecture series at Long Island University's
Southampton
College. All lectures, held in the
Fine Arts Theatre,
are free and open to the public. A
reception in the Avram Family Gallery will follow each lecture.

- Wednesday, March 5, 7 pm
- Dr. Robert Brier, Chairman of the Philosophy Department at C.W. Post and
distinguished archeologist and Egyptologist, will present his talk on
mummies with a
video he completed recently for National Geographic. In it he demonstrates ancient
mummification techniques on a modern-day human cadaver. Dr. Brier, is studying the
Vanderbilt Mummy purchased by William K. Vanderbilt II in 1932 from a Cairo carpet
salesman, to determine its cause of death. This past June along with scientists from the
University of Liverpool, Dr. Brier published x-ray data which indicated that King Tut, the
Egyptian boy-Pharaoh, may actually have been the victim of foul play. He is also
completing a cable TV series on Egyptian history and antiquities for the Learning
Channel.

- Noel Rowe, Southampton Graduate Campus alum--73, author, and photographer, will show slides
and discuss his book,
A Pictorial Guide to the Living Primates. He traveled to 20
countries on three continents over five years for this book, the first to depict in color each
of the 234 species of primates.
- Saturday, April 5, 2 pm
- Dr. Clyde Roper of the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History will show slides and
discuss his expedition to the coast of New Zealand where, supported by National
Geographic, he conducted extensive research on giant squid. His lecture, Sex, Lives, and
Video Tales: Giant Squid is also part of the Marine Science/ Environmental Science
lecture series and the McGrath Lecture series.

A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum. $50
includes round trip bus fare, a ticket, and meal. The Hampton Jitney will leave the college
at 5 pm sharp. Reservations requested as soon as possible through 287-8302.
- Monday, April 14, 8 pm
- William LaRiche, a writer and architect, on Alexandria, the Sunken City: Search for the
7th Wonder. LaRiche will discuss his research, sponsored by National Geographic, and
his most recent visit to this underwater archeological site in Egypt.
- Thursday, May 1, 7 pm
- Dr. Red Owl, Executive Assistant to Long Island University's
President David
Steinberg, will discuss the historical national policy toward
American Indians.
- Thursday, May 8, 5 pm
- Dr. Luke Colavito former President of the American Audubon Society and research
botanist for Cornell University's Boyce Thompson Institute, will discuss the great
treasure of Fine Art in Central and Western New York State museums.
