Southampton, NY -- Laura Lyons of Southampton, formerly the general manager of the John Drew Theater of Guild Hall in East Hampton, has been named Director of Continuing Studies at Southampton Graduate Campus of Long Island University.
Ms. Lyons assumed her duties on July 1, said Nishan J. Najarian, University Dean for the School of Continuing Studies. She replaces Carol Murdock, who passed away April 22.
"I am confident that Laura has the experience and skills to further the growth of our Continuing Education Program," said Najarian. "She brings to the position management skills, marketing expertise and knowledge of the community."
As director, Ms. Lyons will coordinate the College's adult education and continuing studies programs. She plans to build upon several fields which are especially ripe for growth, including health care, English as a second language, and real estate. Continuing Studies also offers classes in art, computer graphics, foreign language, writing, insurance licensing, and construction/building inspection.
In the future, she hopes to bring various professionals to the College for Career Nights. "It's an informal way to motivate students to pursue a particular career," said Ms. Lyons.
Ms. Lyons has handled several major fundraising projects for Paul Simon's charity, The Children's Health Fund, which included a Celebrity Pro-Am Tennis Challenge and a benefit dinner at the 21 Club in Manhattan.
She earned her B.A. in psychology from SUNY New Paltz and a certificate from the Katharine Gibbs School in New York. In 1992, she took a screen writing workshop at Southampton Graduate Campus.
Most recently, Ms. Lyons has been the business manager of a large privately held estate. She has previously served as general manager of the Gateway Playhouse in Bellport, and was responsible for coordinating a conference on Ship Finance and a seminar on Oil Pollution.
