The Southampton Graduate Campus Tennis Team, guided by Head Coach Chuck Hitchcock and Assistant Coach Jeffrey Bone, completed their third New York Collegiate Athletic Conference season with a 5-4 record.
A 9-0 victory over Webb Institute on May 5, 1997, gave the Colonials-- a co-ed team who play in the men's conference-- the first winning season in the program's history.
"Our players put in a lot of hard work, so it was great to finish the season in convincing fashion," said Dr. Hitchock, who also coached the team in the 1970s.
Chuck Zegarra was No. 1 in singles, followed by Erik Wangenstein, Freddie Rydell, Heath Camhi, Paul Warywoda and Brendan Ottati.
The doubles teams, in order: Zegarra-Wangenstein, Camhi-Rydell, and Paul and Nick Warywoda. Jen Ogrodnick, who played in one of the winning matches over Webb, and Mark Abramson, also were key players. Lizette Santiago served as team manager.
