Senior point guard Tammy Walsh, who was named NYCAC Player of the Week for her play from January 6-12, scored her 1,000th career point last week as a member of the Southampton Graduate Campus women's basketball team.

The week was full of milestones for Walsh, who reached 1,000 points in an 83- 50 home court win over Concordia on January 15. As of January 19, she has 1,022 career points, third on Southampton's all-time list behind Meegan McGuire (1,499) and Michelle Reilly (1,409).

On January 11 against Queens College, the Lady Colonials' co-captain tied her own school record with 11 steals in one game.

Among active Div. II players, Walsh ranks first in the nation with 394 career steals, good for fifth on the all-time list and first in Southampton history. By the end of 1996-97, her final season of eligibility, she projects to finish second in career steals in Division II.

"No player in Southampton Graduate Campus history has meant as much to the women's basketball program as Tammy," said Anthony Bozzella, Head Coach. "And despite all her success, she doesn't have an ego at all."

Bozzella also credits some of Walsh's development to Kevin Ryan, Assistant Coach of the men's basketball team. "Kevin has done a great job helping Tammy develop her jump shot. She has worked hard on it, and is having a terrific year."

This season, Walsh leads the New York Collegiate Athletic Conference in field goal percentage (.60), ranks second in steals (4.0 per game), second in assists (5.3 per game), and is in the top 15 in scoring average (11.9).

The 5-foot-6 native of Lake Hiawatha, New Jersey entered the season with 10 team records to her name. At Morris Catholic High School and now at Southampton College of Long Island University, Walsh has excelled as a three-sport athlete. The Elementary Education major played midfield for the Lady Colonials' soccer team, and first base/outfield in softball.
