Ralph Schiano, President of the South Fork Groundwater Task Force, will be guest speaker at Southampton College of Long Island University on Wednesday, December 1, at 7:30 PM., as part of the Institute for Sustainable Development Speaker Series. The topic will be "Toward a Sustainable Water Management Plan for the South Fork."

Schiano, who has advanced degrees in engineering, is a founding member of the South Fork Groundwater Task Force and became its president in December of 1998. He has been an aggressive and tireless advocate of groundwater protection. Under his leadership, SFGTF has become the leader in groundwater protection on the South Fork. The Task Force is composed of residents in the Towns of East Hampton and Southampton.

The presentation at Southampton College will consist of three parts. First, Schiano will speak about Long Island's only source of water, the groundwater beneath our feet. He will then elaborate on current and future pollution and depletion problems threatening Long Island groundwater. Finally, Schiano will address solutions to reduce pollution, elaborating on the extension of the Pine Barrens protected area east of the Shinnecock Canal. The South Fork Groundwater Task Force is developing the South Fork Drinking Water Protection Plan, which includes proposed maps for the Pine Barrens extension.

The lecture is free and will be held in the Business Center Lecture Hall. For information call Scott Carlin, Co-Director of the Institute for Sustainable Development, at (516) 287-8238.
