Fax: (516) 283 4081Southampton, NY --The men's soccer team at Southampton College of Long Island University will put its undefeated 10-0-1 record on the line-- and will attempt to break its single-game attendance record-- when it hosts 10-2-1 Dowling College on Saturday, Oct. 16 at 2 p.m.
Admission is free to the game, which pits Long Island's two top-ranked Div. II teams. The College's soccer attendance record is 1,000 fans, a mark that could be broken Saturday. Southampton, now ranked no. 1 in the Northeast and no. 3 in the nation, face Dowling, ranked no. 2 in the region and no. 9 in the nation. The stakes are huge, including a shot at a berth in the NCAA postseason tourney.
The Colonials' top scorer is Johan Kron, one of eight players from Sweden. Kron, a 1998 First Team Div. II All-American, has 17 goals (6 game-winners) and 8 assists in 10 games.
Southampton also is led by its two captains, both of whom earned First Team All-NYCAC honors in 1998. They are: stellar defender Nick Rotiroti, a native of Anjou, Montreal, and a member of the Canadian Junior Olympic team; and Roger Svensson of Solvesborg, Sweden, a talented goalkeeper who registered 11 shutouts in 18 games last season.
Returnees are: Yugoslavian-born defender Dusan Erceg, a 1st Team All-NYCAC pick; defender Mike LaCarrubba of Ronkonkoma, NY; midfielder Andreas Lindberg of Malmoe, Sweden; midfielder Carl Lindgren of Stenhullen, Sweden; defender Johan Lindquist of Goteborg, Sweden; forward Staffan Linne of Stockholm, Sweden; Desmond Megna, a midfielder from Mastic Beach, NY; senior midfielder Mans Selander of Floda, Sweden; and forward Rich Stoia of Shirley, NY.
Freshmen are: midfielder Daniel Olsson of Stenhullen, Sweden; Jonathan Haulenbeck, a midfielder from Pennsauken, NJ; forward Corey Semo of Carthage, NY, whose sister Stacia plays soccer for the Lady Colonials; midfielder Matt Vilbus of Whitehall, PA; and goalie Sean Webber of Hoosick Falls, NY. Defender Colin Goin of Briarcliff, NY, is a transfer from Southern CT.
Southampton's pipeline of Scandinavian talent began in 1993, and has grown via word of mouth in Sweden. No soccer team in the conference, and perhaps none in the nation, now has more Swedes. "We're playing more of a European game than ever," said coach Ed Goodhines, whose '98 squad went 15-2-1 overall, 7-1 in NYCAC. "The Swedes play with a lot of finesse, and elevate everyone's level."
Last season, for the first time ever, the Colonials were ranked no. 1 in the region. (This followed Southampton's upset win over Southern Ct., whose 56-game winning streak dating to 1993 was ended.)
