As New
York State Teaching Certification requirements become increasingly
stringent over the next few years, it will be more important
than ever before for teaching professionals to earn their
master's degree.
Southampton
College offers two graduate-level education programs, the
M.S.Ed. in Elementary Education "N-6" and
the M.S.Ed. in Reading.
The
M.S.Ed. in Elementary Education "N-6"
provides an in-depth study of teaching methods for the elementary
school level, in addition to the development of a problem-solving
based teaching approach.
If
you are interested in pursuing a career in reading education,
the M.S.Ed. in Reading provides the theoretical background
and technical preparation you'll need to meet the challenges
of this rewarding field. Coursework for both degree programs
is arranged in three sequential phases. PHASE I provides
a broad investigation of teaching-learning through a selection
of three courses geared to assist you in placing your specific
teaching objectives into a broader perspective, to develop
techniques of self-analysis and to investigate special problem
areas. PHASE II provides advanced training in Reading/Literacy
or Elementary Curriculum. PHASE III stresses educational
research culminating in a thesis.
Similar
to the undergraduate educational programs, both graduate-level
degrees provide the opportunity for you to meet and work
with local teachers and principals. Note - New York State
Education Certification requirements will change in 2000.
Southampton's Education programs will be changed to meet
the new requirements.
