The character of a historic town........
The excitement of a world famous resort and College on the
move
The Town of Southampton offers the best of both worlds, the
rich history and charm of an old English colonial settlement,
combined with the excitement of one of the most popular resort
settings in the nation.
Founded in 1640, it has the distinction of being the first
English Settlement in New York State. It was named for the
Earl of Southampton, Henry Wriothesly, who arranged for
the first settlers to come to what is now Long Island. In
1638, these settlers purchased 8 square miles of land which
today includes land from what is now East Hampton to Canoe
Place, from Peconic to Shinnecock Bays.
The town patent was given in 1686, after the English had
taken what is now New York from the Dutch.
Walk around town and you will come across several old
buildings that date back to the time of the original settlers.
Today Southampton has evolved into a summer hot spot for
vacationers from around the globe. In fact , many celebrities,
writers and artists like the area so much that they have
chosen to make it their year-round home. Some even teach
at the College.
Chic restaurants, designer shops, art galleries, museums
and trendy clubs are all part of the scene, in addition
to some of the most beautiful beaches in the country.
And if that isn't enough to keep you busy, the excitement
and culture of New York City is just
90 miles away.
Southampton Graduate Campus was founded in 1963 by Long Island
University, the eighth- largest private university in
the nation. From the beginning, we have dedicated
ourselves to providing our students with the
knowledge and skills they need to succeed both in and outside
the classroom.
Over the years the College has grown physically and academically.
New programs, faculty and facilities, including Chancellors
Hall have made Southampton a college on the move.
